The Complete Works of Rudyard Kipling Customer Reviews
:- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Salgud -- Not “complete” at all. : I bought this book because it claim to be “the complete works” which it is not. It does not contain “the man who would be King” which is the main reason I bought this book. Another post above states that it does not include all of his poetry. I don’t like deceptive advertising at all. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from D. Kerr -- EXCELLENT EDITION ! : SMASHING ... in the traditional more refined, well-honed Rudyard manner. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Avery Gordon -- Great value for money. : Four stars only because I'm sure Kipling wrote more poetry than what's included in this book. Kipling was a highly productive writer. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Willis -- I love the convenience of having the material in a single ... : The works speak for themselves. I love the convenience of having the material in a single package, allowing me to conveniently reread favorite passages, refresh my memory of works I haven't read in a while, and lose myself in the imagination of this bard/historian/sociologist/analyst. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Wonderful writing, wonderful stories! : I started with Kim, which was a fascinating tale of India including the love of a lama and espionage. Strongly recommend it. All the other stories are great, too! ( Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Harmon -- this is pretty nice to have : If you Kipple, this is pretty nice to have. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from John D. Sens -- Nicely done. : Easy to read on Kindle. Glad it was available so inexpensively. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from seafood -- Nothing much has changed. : The works of Kipling speak to a bygone time when he refers to the British Empire and the attitude of "our Empire"; that is of value historically. His take on the life of the common British soldier is almost painful to read since he encapsulated then what many soldiers experience today. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ms. Erica Wildwood -- Wonderful book, incredible value : What a great writer Kipling was. And if you think he was a jingoistic, imperialist racist read 'The Story of Muhammad Din' (in Plain Tales from the Hills) and weep. I do, every single time. Such understated compassion was typical of Kipling. He'll make you laugh, too, and be thrilled. Of course I adore 'The Cat that Walked by Himself' (Just So Stories), being a mad cat lady, but I also loved 'Thy Servant, a Dog' (and wept again, at the end). I needn't comment on The Jungle Books or Kim, but this collection contains many lesser known gems. And remember, it is arrogant and ignorant to judge the morals of a bygone age by current standards. Imagine what they'll say about us in a hundred years (if humans are still around by then). ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 27, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kenneth James Walker -- Well written tales but from a different age and perspective : It's amazing how far we have come. Yes they are racist sexist and definitely not PC, But so was all the world at that time. It has taken a long time for the human race to get this far with the issues, and there is still a long way to go. Read about the journey between the lines and be careful and constructive with your criticisms. There is still a lot of virtue in the stories and the yarns are great. I am reading them for the second time in my life and am horrified over elements I missed concerning the PC issues the first time round. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 23, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- High quality adveture stories, beautifully written. : I had read very little Kipling but, prompted by a visit to the splendid Bateman's in East Sussex, decided to give him a try. Now I know why he was so highly regarded as a writer! These stories vividly portray an exotic world full of well drawn characters who are involved in the most fascinating variety of exploits. Highly recommended if you enjoy being transported into a world so very unlike the one you are living in at present. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 5, 2017 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from april -- good compilation, with some defects : kipling is superb...sharp, insightful, knows how to pace a narrative...i do not like his "irish" dialect stories, or his occasional fall into racist/sexist language, but when he is not disturbed by his own, personal devils, he is very good...he has a sentimentality towards the young which can be excused, by his own horrifying experiences, and the deaths of two of his own children, and which is especially obvious in the "just so" stories, and some of his points about women makes one wonder about his wife and their relationship...many people dislike what they call "jingoism", but i think it is a simple, very naive, urge to belong...he was always an outsider, once he had left the protected, charmed childhood security of early life in india...the compromises he had to make along the way are obvious in his writing...to me, he and somerset maugham are the guides to the east, and to the colonial mindsets...and i really like mrs hauksbee...i thought of her when i visited simla... - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Will -- A kindle bargain : An absolute bargain at the price considering the fact that Kipling was a Nobel prize winner for literature. Kipling is not everybody’s cup of tea but some of his stories are absolutely masterly. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 20, 2019 )
